Fly Control Auckland

Flies are generally found in organic matter, decaying vegetation, animal excrement, and stagnant water. Odours, such as cooking, can attract flies up to 50 meters from their breeding site. If the wind is right, they can travel several kilometers. Flies can become a serious nuisance, especially in large numbers.

They are one of those annoying insects that seem to exist everywhere you go. You could be sitting at home then out of nowhere a fly gets in and starts making rounds in your home, occasionally landing on you to test how good your reflexes are. Flies come from a highly successful biological order that is made up of more than 150,000 species across the globe. Flies typically have a body made up of the head, thorax, and abdomen with sucking or piercing mouthparts and a single pair of transparent wings. Some of the common species of flies in Auckland include blowflies, crane flies, houseflies, fruit flies, cluster flies, sandflies, blackflies, among others.

Flies love to come into our homes to search for food. Since flies can only eat food in liquid form, they usually vomit on solid food so that their saliva, enzymes, and digestive juices can turn the food into a thick liquid they can suck. Flies particularly love excrement and decaying things, so you are likely to find many of them in your garbage bins or hovering around your pet’s poop.

Identifying Fly Infestation

fly infestation

Seeing a few noisy flies in your home or business premises does not necessarily mean that you have an infestation. Flies are everywhere so there’s always a chance that one or two makes it into your home. However, it should be a warning sign that you need to take some preventative measures. The following are the common signs of a fly infestation:

  • Seeing small dark clusters – check your walls, light fittings, and upper areas of rooms for small clusters of spots/ fly droppings. Check other areas that you don’t regularly clean thoroughly such as the drains, drainage channels, and sub-floor cavities. Areas around the sink and gully traps should be monitored as well.
  • Regular sightings of the flies – many flies buzzing in or near your home could indicate that you have a fly infestation. Seeing a fly once is normal, but if it keeps happening every single day, you have a problem. Flies love hiding in your gutters, rainwater butts, old machinery, and tyres.
  • Maggots – flies like to breed in warm, damp areas. They lay hundreds of eggs in various breeding sites in and around your home. It could be in deteriorating food, waste areas, in excrement and other places. When flies are in their larval stage, they are typically in maggot form so if you see maggots, you can expect to see grown flies a few days later.

Why You Need To Get Rid Of Flies

Unfortunately, many people don’t realise that some species of fly also transmit a wide range of diseases including salmonella, dysentery, tuberculosis, cholera and parasitic worms. When you consider that some fly species can mature from eggs to adults in just seven days you realise how important fly prevention & treatment is for your building.

These are the reasons why fly control Auckland is vital when you have a fly problem:

  1.  They are dirty – As mentioned above, flies love to hang around in garbage bins, excrement, and carcasses. Whenever a fly lands on any of these filthy environments, the bacteria in such places sticks onto their bodies, especially their wings and legs. They then transfer this bacteria to you or your food when they come into your home.   While not all the bacteria can be dangerous, some can cause diseases such as urinary tract infections, stomach ulcers, skin infections, stomach cancer, and many others.
  2.  They bite – Some species of flies such as the Sandflies that are common in Auckland can deliver painful bites when looking for a blood meal. These bites can cause subsequent itchiness, swelling, and redness of the skin. The effects of the bites can last for a few days or several weeks depending on how severe the reaction was.
  3. Flies are extremely annoying – They come into your home when you least expect it and keep flying around making that annoying buzz sound and occasionally landing on you. The most annoying thing about them is how quick they are. It’s almost impossible to land a hit on a fly when you attempt to swat them with your hands or a folded magazine.

Dealing With Flies

  • Deny them access – Flies are brave creatures and if they see a window or door open, chances are they won’t hesitate to go in. Keep your doors and windows closed especially if your area has many flies.
  • Flyscreens – If you can’t keep your doors and windows closed, you need to install Flyscreens, particularly around the kitchen and waste areas.
  • Keep your home clean – Flies love dirty surfaces since that’s where they know they can find their favorite snacks. Keep your home clean at all times by washing regularly especially in the kitchen and bathrooms. Whenever you spill any liquids or food debris, always clean it up immediately.
  • Cover your food – Whenever you leave your food uncovered, flies see it as an invitation to land on it while rubbing their dirty little hands and vomiting on it. Consuming such food sometimes leads to serious illnesses.
  • Clean up after pets – When your dog poops in your yard, it doesn’t take much time before you see a bunch of flies hovering over the poop or landing on it. Always clean up after your pet and monitor your yard for feces regularly.
  • Keep drains clean – Flies love breeding in drains particularly those packed with debris and decaying matter. Check your drains regularly and ensure they are always clean and free of debris.
  • Let the breeze in – Flies hate being blown around, which is one of the reasons why you don’t see many flies during the winter. Keep your home well-ventilated and switch on the fan if you have one.
  • Surface sprays – These are sprayed on the areas with dark spots or the areas that are frequented by flies. The spray irritates the flies and keeps them away.
  • Space sprays – Natural pyrethrin sprays are every fly’s worst nightmare. When you spray your home with them, any fly that comes into contact with the pyrethrin droplets dies shortly after. However, their effect doesn’t last long.
  • Call in the experts – If you’ve tried everything and the flies still won’t leave, it’s probably time to call in fly control Auckland experts to handle it for you.

How We Control Flies

Our technician will apply a treatment to external entry points and internal problem areas such as walls, ceilings, window sills and door frames. Additional traps may be setup internally and externally such as aerosol units, smell traps and light traps. The treatment works on residual contact. The insect absorbs the pesticide by crawling over, or landing on, the product. The pesticide then kills the insect by affecting the nervous system.

Chemical treatment –

  • Internal misting of residual product – attaches to ceiling, walls and curtains.
  • External application of residual product around entrance points.

Non-chemical treatment –

  • Bait boxes with attractant placed exernally to targeted areas.
  • Insect Light Trap in kitchen area.

Note: Contact product kills flying insects when they land on it. It will not kill the insects instantly as the product needs time to be ingested. Insect screens can be placed on all windows and/or doors by client.

Dogs must be secured before our technician arrives. All animals (birds, cats, dogs) to be removed to non-treatment area e.g. garage / if garage is being treated animals to be removed from site during treatment and for 3 hours after treatment. Dogs can be secured outside away from treatment area. Fish tanks must be covered.
